Abstract
This paper explores the shift in Anita Desai’s writing from focusing on the emotional lives of female characters to delving into the inner struggles of male characters, particularly in her novel In Custody (1984). While her earlier works like Cry, the Peacock and Clear Light of Day examine the resilience and emotional complexity of women, In Custody turns its attention to the challenges faced by men. The novel’s protagonist, Deven Sharma, grapples with feelings of inadequacy, intellectual disillusionment, and emotional vulnerability. This study looks at how Deven’s struggles reflect a broader shift in Desai’s storytelling, moving from the inner strength of her female characters to the fragile psyche of her male protagonist. Through Deven’s journey, Desai expands her exploration of human consciousness, offering a deep reflection on failure, identity, and the search for meaning in both men and women.
