Abstract
The transition from sports to retirement presents significant psychological challenges for athletes, including identity loss, emotional distress, and decreased life satisfaction. This study examines the role of athletic identity, pre-retirement planning, and social support systems in mitigating these challenges. Athletes with strong athletic identities often face greater adjustment difficulties, whereas those with dual-career pathways or proactive planning experience smoother transitions. Evidence-based psychological interventions, such as narrative therapy, and robust social support networks from family, friends, and teammates enhance resilience and adaptability. Understanding the nuances of voluntary versus involuntary retirement further informs tailored support programs. The findings emphasize the importance of comprehensive career development initiatives to ensure athletes thrive beyond their sports careers, fostering long-term well-being and personal growth.
