Abstract
Agriculture has long stood as a foundational pillar of the Indian economy, deeply embedded in the nation's socio-economic framework. While its contribution to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) has seen a relative decline over the decades, the sector remains integral due to its substantial share in employment, food security, export revenue, and industrial development. This paper explores agriculture's multifaceted role in India's economy, examining its impact on national income, labor absorption, rural development, and international trade. The discussion also evaluates structural challenges such as productivity constraints, climate vulnerability, and market inefficiencies, along with a review of ongoing reforms and the strategic outlook needed for future growth. A holistic approach combining technology, policy innovation, and institutional reform is imperative for a resilient and inclusive agricultural future.
