Abstract
Historically counseling has been characterized by the following words: educational, preventive, vocational, supportive, situational, problem solving, conscious awareness, normal development, present time and short term (Brammer, Shostrom, Abrego, 1989) ^[1]. Counseling is effective in problems like school discipline, depression, anxiety, anger, lack of respect for others, power struggles, eating disorders, sleep disorders, substance use, sexual issues social skills issues, relationships, family issues, sibling issues, coping with parental conflict, coping with loss, stepparent issues, multiple homes, blending family issues, coping with trauma, physical/sexual abuse, emotional neglect issues, coping with illness, lack of ambition, coping skills problems and general dissatisfaction with life. It also helps address parenting problems. Aim of the present investigation was to compare the counseling needs of male and female elderly residing in old age homes. The counseling needs scale developed by Chouhan & Ganotra (2008) ^[2] was taken as the tool. Result indicated that there is no significant difference between the counseling needs of the elderly male and females residing in old age homes, all scored higher in the above said dimension.
