Abstract
JEEVIKA has been playing a very important role in empowering the lives of village women both socially and economically. It is run under Bihar's Livelihood Promotion Society. It’s main goal is to form community-based Self Help Groups for women in the villages. With the help of JEEVIKA, women have helped empower themselves, by playing a central role in the development process. Women in the larger picture are not just passive recipients of benefits accruing through welfare schemes in the society, but are active promoters and facilitators of social transformation. Thus they are active “agents” of change in a state like Bihar, which has had a slow and late start as far as economic development is concerned. It has not only helped empower women economically but also psychologically by increasing awareness, self-confidence, mobility, increasing interest in social work, skill development and leadership qualities etc. In this article effort has been made to find out the differences between SHG’s women and Non SHG’s women of Bihar.
