Abstract
Phytoplankton succession in open lakes depends on the availability of nutrients, temperature, light intensity and transparency. Phytoplankton communities usually undergo a fairly predictable annual cycle, but some species may grow exponentially forming the blooms. Accordingly, the seasonal diversity and dynamics of phytoplankton and their correlation with environmental factors were investigated in Ganesh Mandir Pond.
In the present study, variation and seasonal changes in phytoplankton community in fresh water Ganesh Mandir Pond, Jodhpur was carried out during September 14, 2022 to August 13, 2023. During study of twelve months, 30 genera belonging to 5 groups of phytoplanktonic community viz. Chlorophyta, Bacillariophyta, Cyanophyta, Pyrrophyta and Euglenophyta were recorded and population density was assessed. The population density of phytoplanktons varied from month to month, and the highest peak (228x103 unit/l) was recorded in the month of June and minimum density (29x103 unit/l) in the month of January 2023. The Diversity of the different phytoplankton was recorded more in summer season than winter and rainy season. The Chlorophyta group was dominated phytoplankton population throughout the study period. Their occurrence in eutrophic water was well documented. The species composition and species diversity study also points towards the polluted nature of reservoir water. The quantitative and qualitative studies of phytoplanktonic may provide good indices of water quality and capacity of water to sustain heterotrophic communities.
