The digital environment of today's library: Embracing ICT skills and competencies

AbstractLibraries have been a cornerstone of educational institutions, providing access to information and resources. In today's digital age, libraries must adapt to provide users with the skills and competencies needed to succeed. The rapid evolution of information and communication technologies (ICTs) has transformed the library landscape, necessitating librarians to acquire new skills and competencies. This article explores the critical role of ICTs in modern libraries, highlighting the challenges and opportunities presented by digital environments. It examines the essential ICT skills and competencies required for librarians to effectively manage and leverage digital resources, services, and technologies.
The study identifies key challenges, including technological, human resource, information management, user-centric, and strategic/financial issues. It also discusses future directions for libraries, emphasizing the need for innovative ICT-enabled services, collaborative communities, digital ethics, and inclusive environments.
