Abstract
Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, an architect of the Indian Constitution and a trailblazing social reformer devoted his life to eradicate caste-based discrimination and gender inequality within the framework of social justice. This paper examines Ambedkar’s intersectional and comprehensive approach to caste and gender, focusing on how his progressive ideas for an egalitarian society aimed to empower underprivileged and marginalized sections of the society. Ambedkar recognized that caste and patriarchy were interlinked systems of oppression. Ambedkar contended that the caste system, as a form of structural inequality, not only oppressed Dalits but also reinforced patriarchal norms that suppressed women, especially those from marginalized communities. The paper explores into Ambedkar’s advocacy for women’s education, economic independence, legal rights and labour laws. It draws attention to his attempts to reform Hindu personal laws by enacting the Hindu Code Bill, which sought to improve women’s status by promoting gender equality in matters of marriage, inheritance, and property rights. The study looks at Ambedkar’s significant writings, speeches, and legislative contributions that paved the way for the abolition of caste discrimination, the promotion of gender equality and social justice. The paper argues Ambedkar’s vision for abolishing caste and empowering women remains a crucial framework for addressing contemporary socio-economic inequalities.
