AbstractIntroduction: Substance use is one of the important and concerning public health issues faced by all society, which causes variety of problems. Substance use leads to development of physical and mental health problem, as well as it causes impairment in multiple areas of functioning.According to American Psychiatric Association “Substance use disorders (SUD) are characterized as maladaptive patterns of substance use leading to clinically severe impairment or distress potentially affecting physical and psychological functioning; personal safety; social relations, roles and obligations; work and other areas”.
Aim: The study is to assess self-esteem and psychosocial stress among the persons with substance use disorder attending a tertiary mental health care setting.
Objectives: The study are to describe the socio demographic profile and clinical variables of the persons with substance use disorder, to describe the self-esteem and psychosocial stress variables, to determine the relationship between self-esteem level and psychosocial stress and to estimate the association of self-esteem level and psychosocial stress with selected socio-demographic and clinical variables among the person with substance use disorder.
Materials and Methods: Non-experimental descriptive research design was adopted for the study. A purposive sampling technique was used to select 60 persons with substance use disorder who attended in Department of Addiction Medicine of LGBRIMH, Tezpur. Data was collected by Socio-demographic Proforma, standardized Rosenberg Self-Esteem scale and Perceived Stress scales are used.
Results: The mean and standard deviation of age of starting substance use among the persons with substance use disorder was 19.90±8.4.297 with minimum and maximum age of 12 years and 30 years respectively.60%(F=36) of persons with substance use disorder are found normal self-esteem and 85% (F=51) are found moderate stress. The result also found that 0.159 at the significant level of 0.05 which shows negative correlation and there is no association between self-esteem level and psychosocial stress with selected socio-demographic and clinical variables among the person with substance use disorder.
Conclusion: The present study was conducted with the aim to assess self-esteem and psychosocial stress among the persons with substance use disorder attending a tertiary mental health care setting, after finding and analysis it is concluded that the persons with substance use disorder had f=51(85.0%) moderate psychosocial stress and f=36(60%) normal self-esteem level. There is negative correlation between self-esteem and psychosocial stress and also no significant association with self-esteem and psychosocial stress with selected socio-demographic variables and clinical variables.
