Abstract
Lutein, a carotenoid found abundantly in green leafy vegetables and brightly coloured fruits, plays a crucial role in maintaining optimal eye health. As a powerful antioxidant, lutein is highly concentrated in the macula of the human eye, where it helps filter harmful blue light and neutralize free radicals that can damage delicate eye tissues. Numerous studies have demonstrated that adequate lutein intake is associated with a reduced risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), cataracts, and other visual impairments. In addition to its protective effects, lutein supports visual acuity and contrast sensitivity, crucial for tasks such as reading and driving at night. Despite its significance, many people fail to consume sufficient amounts of lutein in their daily diet, which can lead to cumulative eye damage over time. This review explores the mechanisms by which lutein benefits eye health, the dietary sources rich in lutein, and the importance of supplementation, especially for individuals at higher risk of eye diseases. Understanding the connection between lutein and eye health is essential for adopting dietary and lifestyle changes that promote long-term visual well-being.
