Abstract
In this text I shall explain a certain view about Indian philosophy by exploring the theory of pramāṇa [epistemology] and prameya [ontology] and the different methods used in Indian philosophy. My starting point will be the analysis of J. N. Mohanty’s work ‘A Fragment of the Indian Philosophical Tradition: Theory of Pramāṇa’ as it breaks the common view about Indian philosophy that it aims to nirvaṇa, by throwing light on Indian concept of rationality. Here, I shall focus on the theory of pramāṇa of Indian philosophical tradition which reflects how perception and inference of Indian philosophical tradition is different from experience and reason of western philosophical tradition. And theory of prameya reflects that the possible objects of knowledge in Indian philosophy are concrete and not abstract as western thought. At the end, I shall discuss the different methods used in Indian philosophy including dialogue, dialectic, questioning, and deference.
