AbstractPeriodontal disease includes infectious and inflammatory disease that damages the gingiva, periodontal ligament and alveolar bone and if left untreated can lead to tooth loss. Non-surgical therapies are often effective in managing early-stage periodontal disease, more advanced cases may require surgical intervention, and periodontal flap surgery is a common approach.
The primary goal of periodontal flap surgery is to obtain access to the root surfaces and underlying structures to remove bacterial deposits, calculus, and diseased tissue.
Several flap designs and techniques are employed in periodontal flap surgery, including full-thickness flaps, partial-thickness flaps, and modified flap approaches. The present review gives an outline on indications and contraindications of flap, various flap designs, incisions and steps in flap surgery.
