Abstract
Tourism emerging as a major industry is giving birth to new dimensions to think about. Tourism has been evidently generating employment in far flung hilly areas which used to be unaware of urban life. But with the increase in the number of tourists the interest of tourists has a vast diversity and one of those diversities is seeking a place to leave the hectic urban life behind. Ancient times show how tourists visited different countries for different reasons and so is the case today. Earlier times had diverse interests of tourists but environment was not being exploited to cater to the interests of those tourists. With time industrial development and scientific inventions led to faster ways of travelling and encouraged tourism but it obviously led to more pollution. Uncontrolled and unplanned tourism disturbs and destroys the ecological balance of hilly areas and creates environmental pollution. Environment conservation measures will somehow decide the future of tourism everywhere in general and specifically in hill states like Uttarakhand. Tourism, responsible for a good amount of employment generation needs environment conservation and awareness regarding the same.
