Abstract
Haruki Murakami's novel The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle serves as a profound existential reflection on postmodern Japanese society. Through the protagonist Tōru Okada's surreal journey, the novel explores themes of identity, alienation, and the disillusionment that accompanies rapid societal changes. Murakami critiques the rise of consumerism and the superficiality of modern life, emphasizing the struggle for individuality in a conformist society. By employing magical realism and delving into the subconscious, Murakami's characters embark on a quest for self-identity, confronting both societal pressures and their inner demons. This study examines the existential crisis in The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle and its significance within the broader context of postmodern Japan.
