AbstractA total of three species of snakes common Indian cobra (Naja naja), russell’s viper (Daboia russellii), common Indian krait (Bungarus caeruleus) were examined for the presence of endoparasites. They were screened using classical parasitological techniques sedimentation and floatation methods. The faecal samples collected from the Zoo were analyzed for the presence of parasites. Out of the total nine faecal samples screened, seven (77.7%) samples were positive for gastrointestinal parasitic infection. The parasites identified were Strongyloids sp. (nematode or round worm), Strongyloids sp. (nematode) and Toxocara sp. (nematode).
The percentage of the parasitic attack off eggs/ oocytes of these three different types of parasites observed in the study are Strongyloids sp. (43%), Strongyle sp. (36%) and Toxocara sp. (21%). Strongyloids and Strongyle sp. were found in samples of all the three snakes, but Toxocara could not be found in any of the krait.
