Abstract
It is evident that students at Eastern University, Sri Lanka (EUSL) must utilize English as it is essential for their academic pursuits and success within the university. Therefore, it is imperative that students acquire proficiency in English at all costs. The process of learning English is systematic and can be initiated by mastering the present simple tense, which is typically the first tense students encounter in their English studies. Understanding this tense serves as a foundation for learning other tenses continuously and subconsciously. Thus, this paper aims to highlight the importance of learning and testing the concepts in present simple tense, particularly through the development of a user-friendly computational tool known as the ‘Learner and Tester of Present Simple Tense’. Given the widespread integration of computer technology in English language education, this tool offers a simple, but effective means for students to greatly enhance their understanding of the present simple tense. This study was descriptive in nature, involving 20 first-year students as participants from the Department of Languages at EUSL. The participants underwent a traditional pretest, practice sessions with the tool using their laptops, and a post-test with the developed computational tool. Analysis of the test results revealed a significant improvement in performance in the post-test compared to the pretest. In conclusion, the study demonstrates that the students at EUSL can greatly enhance their understanding of the present simple tense through the utilization of innovative learning methods, surpassing the traditional approaches.
