Abstract
This study examines how information cocoons emerge in the social media era by evaluating individual stories, views, and behaviours. The swift advancement of social media platforms and digital communication tools facilitates easy access to information while also fostering information cocoons across society. This research aims to examine the relationship between the fundamental constraints of social media and individual preferences that foster information cocoons in the digital era. The study examines the phenomenon of personalized and algorithm-based news recommendations and the impact they have on society, such as fake news and misinformation. Through thematic study of discussions and interviews with 20 participants, and a comprehensive review of online resources, researchers conclude that individuals tend to acquire and accept information that reinforces their preexisting opinions. Concurrently, social media algorithms provide information in users' news feeds that corresponds with their preferred interests to increase engagement of users on the platform. The study aims to enhance awareness and educate the public, technocrats, and politicians about the effects of personalized news consumption, while facilitating discourse on ethical decision-making and potential policy reform.
