AbstractGeohelminths refer to a group of roundworms transmitted by soil contaminated with fecal matter. They are endemic to Chad and constitute a serious public health problem. This study aimed to identify the risk factors for geohelminthiasis in the Mayo-Lémié Department of Chad.
Surveys were conducted among the population to identify the factors that contribute to the persistence of geohelminths in the Mayo-Lémié Department.
The risk factors identified were: level of education (χ2 = 16.351; p < 0.0001), untreated drinking water (OR = 1.709 at 95% CI [0.984-2.968]), not washing hands with clean water and soap (OR = 1.545 at 95% CI [0.937 - 2.648], lack of latrines in households (OR = 1.638 at 95% CI [1.018-2.636], ignorance of previous cases (OR=0.765 at 95% CI [0.711 - 0.824]) and lack of awareness of geohelminths (OR=4.745 at 95% CI [1.784 - 12.618]).
This study identified numerous factors contributing to the transmission of geohelminthiasis in the Mayo-Lémié department of Chad. Surveillance of geohelminthiasis and hygiene measures should be strengthened in order to reduce the pathological risk associated with these parasites in Chad.
