Financial inclusion and sustainable development in India: An analysis

Abstract
Financial inclusion has emerged as a critical pillar for promoting sustainable development in emerging economies, particularly in India where a large segment of the population historically remained outside the formal financial system. Over the past decade, India has made significant progress in advancing financial inclusion through targeted government initiatives such as the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY), Aadhar-enabled payment systems, Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), mobile banking, Unified Payments Interface (UPI), and the expansion of digital financial services. These measures have significantly increased access to bank accounts, credit facilities, insurance products, and pension schemes among marginalized sections of society, including rural households, women, small farmers, migrant workers, and micro-entrepreneurs. This research analyzes the relationship between financial inclusion and sustainable development in the Indian context. Financial inclusion contributes directly to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) such as poverty eradication (SDG 1), gender equality (SDG 5), decent work and economic growth (SDG 8), and reduced inequalities (SDG 10). Increased access to formal financial services enables individuals to save securely, invest in education and health, start small businesses, manage risks, and withstand economic shocks. It also promotes transparent governance by reducing leakages in subsidy transfers and improving the efficiency of welfare schemes through digital and cashless platforms.
