Abstract
The reservoirs are a major area of fish production constituting the single largest inland fishery resource in terms of resource size and potential. Fresh water reservoirs also offers livelihood for millions of people. Managing reservoirs together with application of modern technologies are the need of the hour to steer the blue revolution during the 21st century.
A number of natural fresh water dams and lakes are located in the eastern Rajasthan (Aravali regions) in India which have great scientific and socio- economic values. The juggar dam (fresh water reservoir) is located towards east 10 K.M. away from the town Hindaun city, in state Rajasthan, India.
The water of Juggar dam is highly productive to fisheries. The fish fauna is rich in major corps (Laveorohit, Catla catla, Cirrhinus mrigala), minor carps (Labeo bata, Puntius puntius) cat fishes (Mystus singhala, Mystus oar, Wallago attu, Ompakpabeda, Channa marulius and Chandamama), however their yield show fluctuation.
The production of fish is reservoir has to be increased by adopting management and conservation measures through research. The management of the reservoirs needs to be brought under the preview of government against at state level. Since least priority is received for development of the fisheries and its utilization, therefore, capture fishery along with culture-based capture fishery should be made mandatory in these reservoirs.
To increase fish production the following management methods may be used. (1) stock assessment, (2) Regulation of mesh size, (3) Regulation of close season, (4) observing code of conduct for responsible fisheries (CCRF), and (5) Creating awareness among the stock holder for protecting the environment and ecology.
