Teaching of the student teachers and evaluation by different experts-an exploratory study

Abstract
In Teachers’ Training College, the teaching of student-teachers is supervised and by the subject teachers (Experts) and teachers of other subjects (Non-Experts). This study attempts to find whether the evaluation by subject experts and non-experts differ significantly. A video of teaching a History lesson and copy of lesson plan were sent to 10 teacher educators, five experts and five non-experts, selected randomly from 30 such Bengali knowing persons collected with snowballing techniques. A rating scale (NCERT) was adapted and used for this purpose. A two tailed t-test showed that there is a statistically significant difference between two mean evaluation scores by the two groups of evaluators. A qualitative analysis of the views of the evaluators shows that the non-expert group does not bother about the validity of some works like loud reading, lesson plan, use of teaching aids and logical and psychological development of the lesson in History. However, all criticise the lack of interaction of the teacher with class but appreciate the eloquence and hand writing of the teacher.
