Abstract
This study investigates the effectiveness of the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) in enhancing employability among youth in the Devipatan region of Uttar Pradesh, a socio-economically backward area with high rates of youth unemployment. The research aims to assess the outcomes of vocational training provided under PMKVY in terms of skill development, employment generation, and satisfaction levels among beneficiaries. A mixed-methods research design was adopted. Quantitative data were collected from 300 youth beneficiaries across four districts of the Devipatan region Bahraich, Gonda, Shravasti, and Balrampur using structured questionnaires. Additionally, qualitative data were gathered through interviews and focus group discussions with trainees and training center staff. The data were analyzed using SPSS for statistical analysis and thematic content analysis for qualitative insights. The findings reveal that while 72% of respondents gained job-relevant skills, only 38% secured stable employment post-training. Challenges included a mismatch between training and local job markets, inadequate placement support, and limited post-training mentoring. However, beneficiaries reported high satisfaction with the training quality and trainer competence. The study highlights the need for localized curriculum development, stronger industry linkages, and enhanced follow-up mechanisms to improve the program’s impact in rural regions like Devipatan. This research contributes original, region-specific insights into the functioning and outcomes of PMKVY in a largely under-researched and rural context, providing valuable recommendations for policy refinement and program implementation.
