Abstract

The Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-Kisan) Yojana is a major income support scheme launched in February 2019 by the Government of India to provide financial assistance to small and marginal farmers across the country. Under this scheme, ₹6,000 yearly is given in three tranches of ₹2,000 each into the bank accounts of eligible farmer families. The main objective of PM-Kisan is ensuring farmers' economic stability so that the agrarian distress is reduced, and agricultural productivity is further promoted.

It has been entirely funded by the Central Government and has used the digital platform to ensure transparency and efficiency of the transfer process. The benefit is intended for farmers who own cultivable land up to 2 hectares, but later on, this was extended to cover all farmers in India irrespective of landholdings, excluding institutional landholders and professionals.
