Abstract
Man is social being and cannot live in isolation from one another. Each individual is knitted into family that form like the institution which can be called a society. As they live in society they are governed by customs, value, behaviour and beliefs. By having followed the norms in common as a group they are labelled under the name of community, tribe and so on. Likewise, the Koren is also the name of community or a Scheduled Tribe as prescribed by the Indian Constitution, which is found in the states of Manipur. The Korens socio-cultural milieu are also reflected in their folktales besides witnessing in their day-to-day life. One of the folktales about the two orphan brothers by named Khengsiek and Khengdei has been taken to study the socio-cultural milieu of the Koren. Reading from the folktale, the paper is interpreted and analyst to uncover the socio-cultural milieu of the Koren as reflected in the folktales. The folktale enlightens us with minute’s execution and operation of Jhum field from the pre-sowing stage till harvest time. The folktale also highlights and recounts the Chadel performed by the two orphan brothers who have accumulated wealth in course of time through hard work and diligence and postulates the belief of repaying good for evil which it prescribes for the society.
