Abstract
In western Niger in general, and in the Tillabéri region in particular, major efforts have been made to restore the land. The aim of this study is to assess the herbaceous flora at the top and on the slope of the Satara plateau in the Ouallam department. The study selected one site on the plateau and one on the slope of the same plateau. In each site, structures were selected on transects, in which the various observations were made. The floristic composition was determined using the aligned quadrat points method. Jaccard's index of similarity was calculated to compare the herbaceous richness of the two sites. Herbaceous biomass production was determined by systematically cutting all the material in the structure or in the yield square at ground level. The carrying capacity was determined from the herbaceous biomass. The results showed a floristic richness of forty-four (43) species in sixteen (16) families, dominated by the grass family. The coverage rate of the site on the plateau and the slope was 94.27% and 77.06% respectively. The Jaccard index reveals that the sites are not similar, as all the index values are below 50%. Biomass production on the plateau and slope was 332.75 ± 101.11 kg/ha and 199.79 ± 95.57 kg/ha respectively. The carrying capacity was 0.89 and 0.43 LU/ha for the plateau and slope sites respectively. The study helps to consolidate knowledge of upland management.
