Generational relationship in a changing society: A sociological study of Satyajit Rays Films

AbstractThe research examines the way structural changes in society influence human relationships, with a particular focus on generational dynamics. The researcher has selected two films by Satyajit Ray-Sakha Prasakha and Mahanagar, to inspected the evolving social structures, such as changing family roles, changing family values and gender norms, are reflected in and shaped by the films. This research intends to examine the structural changes of society and the impacts of those changes in the inter-generational relationships. Along with analysis of film, this research also incorporates quantitative survey of three generations (X, Y and Z) to support the qualitative findings. By combining film analysis with lived experience, the research underscored the dual role of media: as both a product of socio-cultural contexts and an active agent in shaping social reality. Ray’s films are thus positioned not only as artistic expressions but also as critical tools for understanding the dynamic fabric of society and human connection. This paper has two layers it has a detailed film analysis and supported by a quantitative analysis of the response of three generations. This research applied mixed methods to explore both quantitative and qualitative experiences.
