Abstract
Metaphysical poetry is distinguished by its intellectual rigor, emotional intensity, and innovative use of language. One of the most significant stylistic features of metaphysical poetry is lexical choice, which shapes meaning and conveys complex philosophical, religious, and emotional ideas. This research paper examines the lexical choices in selected metaphysical poems, primarily focusing on the works of John Donne, the founding figure of metaphysical poetry. Using a stylistic framework, the study analyzes different lexical categories such as concrete and abstract vocabulary, religious and devotional lexis, scientific and philosophical terms, paradoxical expressions, and colloquial diction. The paper argues that lexical choice in metaphysical poetry is purposeful and functional, serving as a key tool through which poets negotiate abstract thought, personal emotion, and intellectual argument. By adopting a stylistic approach, the study demonstrates how lexical choices become the primary medium for meaning construction in metaphysical poetry.
