Background: Mental toughness is considered one of the crucial factors that determine players' performance. Sportsmanship represents the ethical face of sports, reflecting the player's commitment to noble values. The more stable and self-controlled the player is, the greater their ability to embody sportsmanship and act in a way that reflects a civilized image of themselves and their team.
Aim: This study investigated the relationship between mental toughness and sportsmanship among players of the Diyala Handball Club.
Methodology: A descriptive correlational methodology was employed, utilizing validated measurement instruments for mental toughness (36 items) and sportsmanship (55 items). Data were collected from the entire population of 18 Diyala Club players participating in the Iraqi Handball League. Statistical analyses, including descriptive statistics and Pearson's correlation, were conducted using SPSS.
Results: The findings revealed that players demonstrated high levels of both mental toughness (mean = 158, 87.7% of maximum score) and sportsmanship (mean = 224, 81.4% of maximum score). A statistically significant positive correlation was found between the two variables (r = 0.749, p < 0.05).
Conclusion: These results highlight that greater mental toughness is associated with enhanced sportsmanship. The study concludes that cultivating mental toughness forms a foundational basis for reinforcing positive sporting behavior, respect for rules and opponents, and the dignified acceptance of outcomes. The research recommends embedding psychological counseling and educational programs into training regimens to strengthen moral values and competitive integrity.
